State of Chaos is a Megagame – a set of boardgames that are interconnected and played by teams of players. The game explores how a fictional state in the US copes with a crisis of terrifying proportions. Teams of players will represent the state government and city mayors, police and emergency services. They will work together to prevent the crisis from devestating their cities and overrunning the state …or not!
The game will be run twice. Each session will be a seperate game. You can buy a ticket or just reserve a space and then pay on the door on the day. The ticket price on the day will also be £10.
All profits from the day will be donated to Macmillan Cancer Support.
Do I need to study any rules before the game?
No, the game is very rules-lite. You will be given a one-page handout which describes any simple rules you need to know before the game begins and any other rules that become important are introduced on rules cards as the game is played. The game organisers will also be standing by to guide everyone through the game procedures.
What roles are there in the game?
Each city will be run by a team of three players: The City Mayor, the Chief of Police and the Chief of Emergency Services. The State Capital city will have a team of 5 running it as it is twice the size of the others. In addition, there will be the State Governor and National Guard Commander.
Can I choose the role I will play before the game?
Because players can just show up on the day to play, we don’t know how many players will attend each game so roles will be allocated just before the game starts. We will do our best to acomodate everyone’s wishes and also try to ensure friends play together on the same team if that is their wish. If you purchase a ticket or reservation you are welcome to drop us an email and let us know any preferences you have for roles or teams.
Is there a minimum number of players you need for a game to run?
Yes, we need at least 11 players – which will allow 3 of the smaller cities to be run. The more players that we have the more cities will be played. We will aim to let players who are booked for a game know as soon as possible if it seems that a game will not have enough players to run.
I have never played a megagame before – what should I expect?
These kinds of game can be quite a stressful and exhausting experience. The game runs to a timetable and does not wait for players so things can get quite frenzied. In addition with so many players and so much happeneing on different boards it can be difficult to get an accurate picture of what is happening. But don’t worry, you will play the game as part of a team meaning that you always have your team mates to rely on.
Is this a real megagame?
This game uses the components and rules from Urban Nightmare: State of Chaos which was a 60-player megagame run for a whole day and linked with several other games around the country. While the game was in development we played the game in the format that is being run here and although shorter and with less players it nevertheless captures much of the spirit of a megagame.
Is there an age limit to play?
In general, the minumum age limit is 18 years of age. However, the game does not contain any themes or images that would be unsuitable for young adults. For players younger than 18 we have to be satisfied that they will be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult throughout the day. If you are buying tickets for someone who is below 18 please contact us so that we can confirm with you that they will accompanied by a guardian throughout the day.
What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?
The Golden Hind has plenty of parking available. It is also 15 minutes walk from the new Cambridge North Railway station. If coming from elsewhere in the city the number 8 bus stops nearby along Milton Road.
Is my registration/ticket transferable?
Yes, if you are unable to make it to the event you can give your ticket to someone else to attend in your place.
What restrictions on accessibilty does the venue have?
The Golden Hind function room is on the upper floor – only accessible by stairs.
Is food availble at the venue?
Yes, the Golden Hind offers snacks and meals which can be ordered and eaten in the function room. Beware though – the game will have a frantic pace and you may actually find it difficult to find spare table space. We would advise you to eat before or after the game.
Can I get a refund?
Yes, if you find you can’t make it we are happy to refund your ticket. We also understand that these sort of games are a new concept and if for any reason the event just doesn’t work for you we offer a full money back guarantee.
